The Wild Northern Botanist is a Victorian-inspired sketch-note journal that teaches learners to observe Alaskan plants, build a useful field reference, and create a layered botanical illustration in Procreate.

This first installment begins where good science begins:

before the name.

Instead of rushing to identify a plant, learners slow down and record what they can actually see—branching, leaf shape, arrangement, texture, color, scale, fruit, and unanswered questions. From there, they build the specimen step by step using a deliberate digital art process:

reference → sketch → ink → watercolor → highlights → labels

The result is a finished field plate rooted in observation rather than guesswork.
